Mangroves and Seagrass: a Green Lifeline for African Coastal Communities

In coastal Kenya, Wildlife Conservation Society has successfully protected mangrove and seagrass habitats and planted new mangrove trees, increasing the amount of carbon stored locally. With support, communities are able to sell this extra carbon and use the funds for critical local projects like getting access to fresh water for village homes.

WCS is partnering with the Kenya Marine Fisheries Research Institute to figure out how to expand this project across more communities.

Simple Tech: a Game Changer for African Coral Reef Fisheries

Wildlife Conservation Society and Abalobi, an African NGO, are launching an innovative project in Kenya and Tanzania to tailor smart phone applications for use by these small-scale fishers.

We provide smart phones to fishers who lack the resources to purchase one on their own, train them to use the tools, and help them turn their data into conservation action and improved livelihood sustainability.
